3 Judo-Inspired Attacks of the Russian Tie

The Russian Tie allows you to control uke’s arm even if they are not wearing a judogi. From there, it’s possible to do a few different types of judo-inspire attacks, even without a judogi.

From an opposite stance situation, you can spin under and do a sumi-gaeshi. You don’t need uke to wear a judogi because you have control of his left arm.

A drop seoi-nage has you dropping underneath uke and in between his legs. For the seoi overshoot, you go further out and rotate over your back, taking uke along with you because of that 2-on-1 grip you have. In judo this is sometimes referred to as uchi-makikomi.

Yes, it’s possible to do an ouchi-gari without uke wearing a judogi. The Russian Tie grip allows for that. Best go for a low drop ouchi. This will allow you to take uke down.
